Hello! This is our Green School’s newsletter. We have gotten up to lots of interesting activities so far this year. We are going to give you a recap of what we got up to for ‘’Climate Action Week’.
All our classes took part in walk cycle or scoot. This is where each class counts how many people in the class walked, cycled or scooted. The class that had the most amount of people walk, cycle or scoot got the prize of a golden boot! Another activity the school took part in was the ‘No Power Hour’. Each class turned off laptops boards and lights etc. for an hour. 🚲🚶♀️🛴
The school took part in a fun upcycle art activity. Everyone in the class helped to bring in lots of different recyclable materials, such as cardboard, plastic bottles, string and more. Using these materials we made all sorts of stuff, such as air-hockey tables, bowling, bird houses, vending machines and plenty more . 🎭
Clontarf Tidy Towns allowed us to come along on one of their clean ups around Clontarf. Half of us picked up leaves and the other picked up rubbish. We hope to participate in another clean up before the end of the school year. 🚮
We also took part in the WEEE Ireland battery collection. Each class collected as many used batteries from their houses and brought them in to school. After a few weeks, WEEE Ireland came and collected them. The school collected enough batteries (over ten large boxes) to be entered into a raffle, with a prize of 2,000 euro for sports equipment. We completed 2 rounds of this collection. 🔋
We are trying to achieve our next green flag for Global Citizenship Litter and Waste. Recently, the Green Girls did a litter and waste audit to measure how much blue tissue, paper, cardboard and plastic we used in a day. We used a weighing scales to weigh the litter and the results were a lot higher than expected. Overall, we used blue tissue the most with a total of approx. 2.8kg for the whole school in a day. 🗑
Because of these results and how many paper towels we use, we have decided to trial hand cloths and wash bags in 4th class as they used the most blue tissue. The 4th class will be trialling this until the end of April. If this goes well, we are hoping to extend this project further to other streams and maybe even the whole school. 🤞
