Last week we were busy carrying out a science experiment on floating and sinking. We investigated which fruits/peels floated and why. We then went on to investigate how boats and ships float, even when they might be big and very heavy. In pairs, we designed our own boats from plasticine and tested them out in our funky looking water. We discovered that the shape of the boat’s base is a very important factor in helping them float. ‘Upthrust’ was our new word of the day that day.
