Maths Websites

Dear Parent / Guardian,

As your daughter moves on to third class, here are a few games that may help her with her maths. As always, these websites have been checked for suitability but please monitor your daughter carefully while using the Internet  as she may navigate away to an unsuitable site.

Enjoy!

Multiplication!!

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Tables are a very important part of third class maths and the girls should be encouraged to work hard at learning them. Everybody learns in a different way and the girls are taught different strategies that they can use to help learn their tables effectively. It is also important that they have an opportunity to put their tables to good use, thereby validating their hard work. To help with this, the girls can use a variety of maths websites with fun multiplication games. A list of good sites is given below, but, as always, please monitor your daughter when using the Internet to ensure her online safety and that she does not navigate away from a recommended site.

http://www.multiplication.com/games/all-games (The ads can be muted on this site)
http://www.mathplayground.com/multiples.html (This game allows you to select the number you wish to practise and works in multiples rather than products. The ads can be muted on this site)
http://www.oswego.org/ocsd-web/games/SumSense/summulti.html
http://www.oswego.org/ocsd-web/games/mathmagician/maths1.html (This game also gives you an opportunity to go over the addition and subtraction tables too!)
http://www.oswego.org/ocsd-web/games/SpeedGrid/Multiplication/urikamultires.html (This game is a good one, and it can become quite challenging. Note that if you press on the wrong number, you have to click it again to de-select before you can move on.)
http://www.learnyourtables.co.uk/en/index2.htm ( A simple site that offers a table test – might be helpful with learning tables for homework)
http://www.oswego.org/ocsd-web/games/Ghostblasters1/gbcd.html (This game is good for learning multiples and also knocks points off if you’re wrong!)

Europe Day 2015 – Ms. Carroll’s third class!

Dear Parents/Guardians,

As you may already be aware the girls in Belgrove are hoping to earn a Blue Flag for our school. The Blue Flag is given as part of a programme that encourages schools to learn about the European Union and our class has been given the country of Finland to research.

The girls have already been put into groups and given their topics for the ‘Europe Day’ which will take place at a later stage in the year. Below are a few links to sites that may help to make research a little easier.

As usual, please be aware that many educational websites contain adverts and pop-ups, some of which encourage you to sign up or subscribe. With this in mind please make sure your daughter is supervised while she is on-line as although these sites have been checked, she could be redirected to something that may not be suitable.

As regards finished results, the girls are being asked to produce a small  (stress free) project that does not need oral presentation. If you have any questions/ queries just pop in or send in a note. Thanks again to those who have already sent in resources etc.!

Enjoy!

Julie Carroll

Mid Term Diorama

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Your daughter is studying the UK in Geography this term and will be asked to complete a small project on the topic. Rather than the normal project that includes a written piece and some illustrations I am asking the girls to complete a diorama. A diorama is a 3 D project usually constructed inside a shoe box and  I have uploaded some examples and helpful websites below.

The girls can chose a general project based on the UK or a more in depth look at something specific. For example, a general project may include a picture of weather, a map showing rivers/mountains/towns and maybe landmarks, food or famous people. A more specific project might look at a place, person or event. In addition to creating a project, the girls will be asked to present their work to the class. As part of this presentation they should be able to speak for at least 90 seconds and no longer than 3 minutes about their project (what they have done and why, and what they have learned).

The project is due after the mid term break. Pictures may be printed but hand drawn pictures would be lovely too! Below are some helpful sites for research but please remember that while these sites have been checked for suitability, your daughter should still be supervised while using the Internet as a research tool. Don’t forget the library and asking friends and family for information is also a great way to research your subject.

Enjoy!!

Julie

Monastery Project

Hi Girls & Parents/Guardians,

As we are doing a small project in school about Monasteries, here is a little bit about the topic to help you. You don’t have to do extra work at home, but you can if you like.

Remember – always ask the grown up in charge before using the Internet and stay on a site until they say you can move onward.

Have fun!

Telling the Time!!

Dear Parents,

In third class at the moment we are starting to learn a bit more about telling the time. This is a subject that some children really struggle with. Chatting about time on an everyday casual basis will help your daughter if she is struggling. Questions such as ‘how long left?’ or ‘what time will it be when..?’ etc will help with calculating time elapsed. The on screen TV guide is a great help with this! For those who may enjoy online learning, here is a list of websites that have ‘telling time’ games that may be helpful to your child in developing maths skills. Remember, please monitor your daughter carefully when using the Internet as although these websites have been checked for suitability, navigation away from these sites may not be safe for her. As an additional challenge, ask your daughter to check the time when she starts and finishes!

 Enjoy!!

(This game is fairly tricky as it involves reading a timetable and working out journey times)

Roald Dahl

Welcome to third class!

To get you back into the swing of working hard, you are being asked to do a small project based on the author, Roald Dahl.  September 13th is the official Roald Dahl Day, and, as we are reading ‘The Twits’ this year, it’s a good time to take on this project. It is due to be handed up on Tuesday, 30th September.  Your project should be completed in either your scrap book or as a poster. If it is in the scrapbook, it should cover around two pages. You are allowed to print pictures (although hand drawn pictures are very nice and very impressive), but all your writing should be your own and not typed. Remember that when you are writing, use your own words and try not to copy from books or websites.

The library is a fantastic place to do your research and there are good libraries locally. If you are going to use the Internet to help you, there are some websites listed below, but please, remember to ask the grown up in charge to help you. If you are using the Internet, don’t click on any adverts or move onto a new page without asking first.  When you are finished, I would like you to include a bibliography. A bibliography is a list of where you got your information from. For example, if I used information that I read in a book, I would list the name of that book and the author (if I know it). I hope you have great fun with this project, and I look forward to seeing them all!!

Parents / Guardians

Welcome to your first project of Third Class! I have put together a short list of websites that may be useful to your daughter when researching Roald Dahl.  While I have checked through these sites for suitability, I would still ask that you supervise your daughter as I am sure you are aware some sites come with links that may not be appropriate. Please make sure that your daughter is monitored carefully while using the Internet to ensure her safety and to make her learning experience a valuable and enjoyable one. Best of luck!!

WEBSITES:

http://www.roalddahl.com/home(NOTE: the blog section on this site can re-direct to a different blog spot)

http://www.biography.com/people/roald-dahl-9264648# (this site is good, but a little grown up)

http://primaryfacts.com/2671/46-roald-dahl-facts/ (this site has some nice fast facts, but also has a good few adverts)

http://www.puffin.co.uk/static/puffinplayground/childrensactivities/downloadspdfs/RoaldDahl/DAHL_FACTSHEET4.pdf

http://www.roalddahlfans.com/mydahlbio.php (this is a good site with only a few adverts)

http://www.ducksters.com/biography/roald_dahl.php (this is also a nice site, but again, it has lots of adverts )

Division Tables

Hi Parents / Guardians,

As you know tables are vital and form the basis of maths from third class on-wards. Its very important that the girls know their tables inside out before they finish third class, and, more importantly, are able to use their tables in maths exercises. Some websites that help with multiplication have already been posted here, and hopefully the girls have found them helpful. To help with division tables, there is another list of links at the bottom of the page.
As always, please ensure that your daughter is monitored when using the Internet. The links that are posted have been checked, but please make sure that your daughter does not navigate away from the website recommended. (Oswego.org is the website of a school district in New York that provide good online resources. BGFL stands for the Birmingham Grid for Learning, which is run by Birmingham City Council. )

http://www.oswego.org/ocsd-web/games/mathmagician/maths1.html

(this game has a space to enter your name. You can type in an initial or just hit the space bar once instead)

http://www.oswego.org/ocsd-web/games/SumSense/sumdiv.html

http://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks1/maths/division/play/popup.shtml

http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/mathgames/fruitshoot/fruitshoot_division.htm (there are some adverts at the side of this page. These adds can be turned off)

http://www.learninggamesforkids.com/math_division_games.html (the flash cards on this page are very good. Again there are adds)

http://www.arcademics.com/games/demolition/demolition.html

http://www.bgfl.org/bgfl/custom/resources_ftp/client_ftp/ks2/maths/bingo/index.html

Hopefully these games will help your daughter to learn and use her tables.

Enjoy!

Mid Term Diorama

Hello Girls!
This is just a little information about the activity that you are being asked to do over the Mid Term Break. As the Winter Olympics is on in Sochi, Russia this year, our theme will be Russia or Winter Olympics. You are being asked to make a Diorama that shows what you have learned about (a) Russia or (b) The Winter Olympics.
A Diorama is a 3 -d model that is created inside a box. It has a background that may have pictures on it. You can have a different material in the foreground – for example if you were showing skiing, you might use cotton wool to represent the snowy slopes. The Diorama should contain at least three images, and you should be able to explain what these images show and why you have chosen to put them in. It would be good for your presentation if you could talk a little about each one.(For example, if you were taking Russia as your theme, you might show Siberia and put in the reindeer herds. You could then talk about the reindeer – what they eat and why the Natal people follow them.)

Here are some images of some good Dioramas. There’s also a link below to a video that might be of some help! Remember, always check with the grownup in charge before using the Internet, and do not move away from a site without permission!
