Science Week

Last week we celebrated Science Week in school. The girls explored the concept of floating and sinking through their Dancing Raisins Experiment.

We also had lots of fun exploring the process of ‘diffusion’ through our Skittles experiment. Each group had to create a circle of skittles on their paper plate. Here’s what happened when we poured warm water onto the sweets…

I was super impressed by all the hard work that went on at home also. The girls uploaded pictures & videos of some of the STEM activities they were working on. I think we most definitely have some budding scientists in our class! Well done girls ✨👏

Science Week 👩🏻‍🔬👩🏼‍🔬

We had a week full of fun and amazing experiments last week to celebrate Science Week. We discovered the theory of Diffusion using Skittles and water. 🌈 We investigated the difference between water and a fizzy drink and their effects on raisins. 🔬 We also made some lava lamps much to the awe and enjoyment of the girls – I think you may have heard their excited shrieks all around Clontarf!!!

The girls also presented their own experiments and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) Challenges from home on Friday morning. Their videos and pictures on Seesaw were amazing! They should be very proud of their efforts! Maith sibh cailíní!! 👏🏼

Fractions.

Jumbo Fraction Magnet Set | Oriental Trading

This month we have been looking at fractions 1 in school. We have been learning about halves, quarters, eighths, tenths, thirds, sixths, ninths, twelfths and fifths. We have been using fraction wheels and walls to compare fractions – equivalent fractions and ordering fractions smallest to biggest

We have focused on problems where we are finding a fraction of a number e.g. What is 1/8 of 72? yes, nine. What is 3/8 of 72? Yes, 27.

The girls have worked extremely hard to develop their understanding in this area which has been fantastic to see – well done girls!

I have linked below some useful websites to revise these concepts:

Maths Week 2020

During the month of October we celebrated Maths Week in the school.  Each classroom had to design their own personal Maths door. The girls designed our Maths door using lots of colourful shapes monsters, numbers and maths symbols. They did a brilliant job! Maith Thú a chailíní 😃👏

Through out the week we celebrated maths each day with a ‘Problem of the Day’. We played different addition and subtraction maths games using our dice and we went on our own Maths Trail around the school searching for different types of 2-D shapes, 3-D shapes, lines and estimating and measuring distances.

The girls also participated in their own Maths Scavenger Hunt at home.  They had to look for leaves, twigs, flowers and shapes at home and post their findings on Seesaw.  Well done girls for all your hard work this week ✨👍

Room 1 😃💕

Wow, what a first term we have had in Room 1!

Firstly, I want to congratulate all the girls on a wonderful return to school this year.  They have made such great efforts at settling back into school and they have worked so hard over the past 2 months.  I am so very proud of them and all their hard work.  Well done girls✨

We celebrated Halloween in the school just before the mid-term break and marked the occasion by dressing up on the Friday. The girls made brilliant efforts with their costumes that I barely recognised some of them!! We took part in the school sponsored walk that day, though a little different this year we were delighted to be able to go out and parade our spooky costumes around Clontarf.

During the month of October the girls were busy creating lots of spooky Halloween art and writing spooky magic potions!

Happy Halloween from Room 3 🎃

We had great fun all week learning about Halloween. We learned all about the history of Halloween and the games that families played in the past on Halloween night. We learned lots of new words ‘as Gaeilge’ about Halloween. We decorated our classroom with Halloween art and we really enjoyed listening to some spooky songs!!

Today, the girls took part in their first Halloween Sponsored Walk and they loved every minute…and they looked fantastic in their costumes too! Maith sibh cailíní!! 😊

Maths Week 2020

Hi everyone,

We had a jampacked Maths Week in Room 3! The girls were really enthusiastic all week and we had great fun! 🎲

We engaged in various activities throughout the week such as maths games, maths trails, maths art, Tables Champion and solving maths problems. The girls did amazing work on Seesaw too completing a Maths Scavenger Hunt at home during the week! We also designed our door for a whole school competition. We are very proud of the acrostic poem we created all together in Room 3. 😊

We ended the week with Mrs. Mc Carthy announcing the prize winners over the intercom for the whole school to hear! Congratulations to Sarah who was our Tables Champion in Room 3 and to Alex who was our Maths Star of the Week. All the girls made a super effort all week. Maith sibh cailíní!! 👏

Have a look below to see ‘sum’ of the things we got up to!
